New Work: “Binondo Annunciation” by Jose Alain Austria, pen-and-ink on paper with metallic accents, approximately 8 x 11 inches, part of the ‘Tsinoy Dreams” series.
“Just musing. What if the mystery of the incarnation happened in the 19th century Philippines, particularly in Manila’s prosperous arrabales named Binondo? I can see in my imagination the Virgin Mary… as a mestiza de sangley wearing the virginal terno befitting of her caste? I can imagine Gabriel as taking the guise of a humble Chinese laborer from the crowded shop-houses of San Nicolas. Will the middle class Virgin Mary recognize in this man—deemed socially-inferior to her in all aspects—as the bearer of the good news of the Sacred’s incarnation in her womb?”
